First deliveries of Nikon D4 delayed until mid-March

Initial shipments of the Nikon D4 to retailers have been pushed into next month. The pro digital SLR had originally been scheduled for worldwide release beginning late next week. Now, says a Nikon USA PR representative, a "minor production delay" means dealers can expect to start taking delivery of the company's new flagship in the middle of March.

Sigma announces dramatic SD1 price reduction, updated DP1 and DP2

Sigma today announced that the price of its SD1 DSLR camera has been reduced to US$2,299 in the U.S. (That is the Minimum Advertised Price, or MAP, which is normally also the actual street price.) This is a reduction of more than $4,500 from the previous MAP. At the same time, the company announced updated versions of the DP1 and DP2 large-sensor compact cameras, which now use the same 14.75 million image pixel, 3-layer Foveon sensor as the SD1.

Olympus announces OM-D E-M5 with 15.93 million image pixel sensor, EVF

To inaugurate a new lineup of Micro Four Thirds format interchangeable-lens compact system cameras called the OM-D series, Olympus has announced the E-M5. Designed for advanced photographers, the new camera boasts a 15.93 million image pixel sensor and a built-in high-resolution electronic viewfinder in a weather-sealed magnesium alloy body styled to evoke the Olympus OM-series 35mm film SLRs of the 1970s and 80s.

Nikon releases firmware updates for J1, V1 cameras

Firmware updates for the Nikon 1 J1 and V1 correct a flash overexposure bug and, in the V1 specifically, an instance of the camera malfunctioning when switching between the rear LCD and the EVF.

Nikon posts full-resolution photos taken with D800, D800E

Nikon has posted 14 full-resolution photos captured with the D800 and D800E by photographers Cliff Mautner, Jim Brandenburg, Muga Miyahara, Rob Van Petten, Toshiya Hagihara and others. All were shot as NEFs and converted in Capture NX2.

Announced: Nikon D800 with 36.15 million image pixel sensor

Nikon has unveiled the D800, a new camera whose headline feature is its 36.15 million image pixel full-frame sensor which, as of this writing, makes it the highest resolution available or announced for a digital SLR camera, ever. We have a comprehensive overview of the new model, as well as its near-twin, the D800E, which is the same in all respects, except one: the blurring effect of the D800's low-pass filter has been cancelled out in the D800E, for maximum per-pixel detail.

NPPA attorney comments on police obstruction of photographers

The war on terrorism has become the war on photography, says National Press Photographers Association general counsel Mickey Osterreicher, as quoted on the web site of the (U.S.) National Press Club. In a presentation to Press Club members, Osterreicher detailed what he says is increasing repression and obstruction of photographers, both amateur and professinal, by police in the U.S. using what he refers to as a "catch-and-release" program.
