Four month old 40D with blown shutter????

I was shooting fireworks tonight with my 40D I bought in Mid-February and got the dreaded Err 99. Switched batteries, switched lens, cleaned contacts, etc. Nada!

Now I have argue with Best Buy (I was smart and bought the extended warranty) as I have a HUGE festival to shoot in less than 2 weeks and I really don't want to do so with my four-plus year old back-up body.

What is with Canon these days? A camera can't even go five MONTHS without messing up? I remember the old F-1, A-1 film cameras that I used for YEARS and the shutters never blew! This thing is supposed to be warranted for 250,000 clicks! Doesn't Canon give a rodent's rump about their reputation any more, what with the problems with the EOS 1D Mark III and even some of the first 40D's having a focus problem???? (I know a rodeo shooter who won't upgrade from the 20D because of the reputation of the 30 and 40D.

If I was not so heavily invested in EOS lenses I'd be looking to switch to Nikon right about now.

Just venting, but this sucks like a HOOVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You spend $1,500 on a camera body you should get RELIABLE performance for that much money!

Good luck with Best Buy. I hope everything works out for you.

Just discovered that my staff position on the newspaper made me AUTOMATICALLY eligible for membership in Canon Professional Services.

I could have had expedited repairs and a loaner body while waiting.

Takes four weeks to process the application, however.

I'll be giving them a call on Monday to see if they will waive the "no fax" application rule or if I can get the process speeded up. Won't do me any good in this case but I want an additional inssurance policy for the future.

After three days of phone tag with the Best Buy corporate campus, I am now the proud owner of a REPLACEMENT 40D.

Brand new, right out of the box.

Their computer should have noted the age of the camera and the Geek Squad agent should have noted that there was no indication the camera had been dropped (it hadn't been) and I should have been given the new camera on day one. It was obviously a flaw in Canon's workmanship or parts. Their arrangement with Canon means replace the camera in the event of some major defect (and it WASN'T the shutter, but the sensor or the processor.

This should have been noted at the FIRST Best Buy we went to in Wausau.

The agent who took the camera in for repair was the one who handed the new box to me.

Tonight he was so nice.

Lord, he was luvey dovey.

:)

Hey Jamie,

Glad to hear you finally got satisfaction. Have you tried the new 40D body? Does it work as expected?

My fiancee was like "you remember all your settings?"

It took me five minutes to set 90 percent of them, with the other 10 percent being set after I started shooting some shots for the paper.

Received my membership kit at work in the mail yesterday.

Took a little over three weeks from start to receiving it.

Membership allows for expedited repairs at 20 percent discount plus borrowing professional gear (bodies, lens and strobes) for two weeks at a time to "try it before you buy it." I also get loaner gear if repairs will be delayed for any reason.

And it's free!

Granted the process for newspaper staff members is a lot easier than freelancers, but if I was freelancing, I'd look into it anyway. If you shoot Canon gear and have a few satisfied customers willing to write a note to that effect on their letterhead, I'd go for it.

Nikon has a variation on it, too.

Nikon's program is called Nikon Professional Services (NPS). I'm not a member. I've read the application. They require full-time photographer (primary source of income) status and letters from multiple other NPS members who will stand up for you. Sounds similar to Canon's CPS to me.

Congratulations on becoming a member!
