Photo-a-Gig: Kalle Björklid

So... this will be my Photo-A-Gig project thread. Feel free to comment.

Staligrand Cowgirls @ Tavastia, 18.8.2007

Same band as above, but backstage shoot:

I really like the shot from the gig, especially the hands on the top of the shot make it very special. And of course, the Stalingrad Cowgirls are lovely. Not so sure about that backstage shot, though. It's just that the backstage of Tavastia has been used in so many shots that it's gotten to a point where it's a bit of a cliché already.

But yeah, I like this photo-a-gig idea of yours. I'm thinking of making a similar thread myself, we'll see if I dare to do it, though...

Thanks, Tomi. I guess the backstage shots work better as a series: http://kuvat.huumakuva.net/thumbnails.php?album=360

The single shot I posted above is meant to be a sort of artist portrait, not a "Tavastia backstage shot" as such :). I know I have a lot to learn about backstage documentaries and such, and also, it isn't entirely easy to just start shooting artists when I don't know them on a personal level (I try to lessen the tension by not being pushy when suggesting these backstage shoots, but hinting that if the artists want, they can invite me there ;))

Some very nice backstage images, #5 & 6 and 7&8 'overlap' too much IMO.
I'ld not show #6 (or 5?) and 8 (definately this one: #7 is better).
Some lovely "portraits".

We're probably looking at the images in different sort orders (I have probably something stored in a cookie...). I can guess which you mean, though. I have to redo this one - her face is too hidden in the small image. But you're right about the need for pruning in any case.

Obviously above my talent level, but I'd like to say I rather like the darkened face. Love the fish eye effect too.

Canon 20D, 350D, 35mm 1.4, 85mm 1.8, 430 EX and 580EX flash.

Disco Ensemble 1.9.2007 @ Lutakko (the main act)

Time to catch up.

I'm adjusting this so that I don't have to post a photo from every gig. It felt too tedious.

Thanks! Btw, that last image is taken at f2.8, ISO3200, 1/6 s, 160 mm :). Sometimes you get lucky. Image stabilization probably didn't hurt (it is good that the blurriness is from the performer moving, not the camera).

"Intohimo" from Sweden.

("Intohimo" is the Finnish word for passion. I wonder how they came up with that - they were all swedish, I think, or at least the singer apologized to the Finnish audience that they couldn't pronounce their own name correctly ;))

So, here I was, ready to comment on these marvelous images and then you changed it up and I got lost ... I like the chest in the first and would like to know the lens ... not, apparently, the 15mm fisheye as in the second. Anyway, I'm not going to try to comment on everything ... it's too messy.

BTW, I have signed up to send my 1DMIII back for "the RECALL". I really like the low noise but I am sure I am having focusing issues in a wide variety of circumstances. I shot with 1DMIII, 1DMIIN and 1DMII for a BB King concert and the two 1DMII's were clearly sharper. I suppose I could help this with calibrating the lenses to the 1DMIII but it ought to be as good as the two older bodies without anything ... the calibrating should just make up for a lens difficulties which I don't think I have ... even my 70-200mm f/2.8L IS with the loose wiggling front is normally crisp as can be. I am still on track to get a second 1DMIII and a 1DsMIII by the new year.

You might want to reconsider the chest-liking (hint: she can't buy beer;)). The lens was Tamron 17-35/2.8-4.0, which now has retired and I'm using the Canon 16-35/2.8 II (I do a lot of manual exposures thesedays, and a variable aperture lens is no good for that if I want to use the largest aperture possible - I usually do). Plus the weather sealing, quicker focusing and 2.8 at the tele-end won't hurt.

Sorry about that, I'll try to do more single-band-posts. It's just that I've become picky and don't get more than 1-2 shots that I like per concert.

I've missed that one. Interesting, thanks for the info. Lucky I have the CPS card, I can cut in line and don't have to wait two weeks for them to start repairing my camera (they have a two-week waiting line for non-CPS-customers here, I've learnt).

"Intohimo" shot is nice. One thing I don't like is that the guitar neck kinda 'disappears' because of the locally darker BG.

"Deep Insight" pic is very nice.

I really need to get with CPS. My 70-200mm f/2.8L IS needs repair but it is my most used lens ... I'm almost considering buying a second one because I shoot once or twice a week with it and can't be without it. Anyway, I will wait to get a second 1DMIII until the issues are resolved so I don't have to send it back, too. I'll have to post B. B. King here, which was my "test" for the AF issue ... the 1DMIII did the worst of 1DMII, 1DMIIN and 1DMIII.

I do like a bunch of these images ... clubs/pits do offer some opportunities that don't exist at the casino.

She can probably steal it! 8)

Nice, I like the Husky Rescue photo very much. Those candles really looked good on the stage.

L

Last two are very nice indeed.

I must say that I really think that Husky Rescue shot is one of the least favorites of Kalle's pictures I've ever seen. The photo is lacking any sort of feeling in my book. I really don't like the expression on her face on that one, makes her look a bit retarded or something. Well, the thing is, I really hate the girl who's singing there, but I would never ever publish a photo that would make her look so bad. And it also looks really cold, like she's having a really chilly moment there or something.

Not sure if I like that noise effect on that 69 Eyes shot, either.

Otherwise it's all really wonderful here on this thread.

And yeah, I'm a bit drunk at the moment, sorry about that...

Interesting opinions :). I can't say I agree (wouldn't have published the pic if I did). About her posture: she's acting out the song's words (which were something about the song's subject keeping her warm during cold nights or something).

69 Eyes shot doesn't have a separate "grain effect", but the digital grain has been pronounced during post procesing. EDIT: and I mean that I didn't pronounce tha grain per se, but it popped up as a side effect.

it's interesting to see a piece of work from you without the heavy grain. Even though I like your style it is not something I incorporate a lot in my images. That might be mostly b/c my editor won't let it slide as "artistic freedom". The Images I get published the most are very clean shots with very saturated colours.
For my personal work though I like to add some grain. Those images are also very different from what I usually publish.
Anyway I do admire your images as they stand out from the rest. Especially the way you frame a lot of subjects whenever possible.

I like the Husky Resque pic. The concert picture should not always be exaggerated with screaming brutal guys ;) Candles are surely in place. Thing that is uncertain for me is the colouring, I'd like something different that violet light...

Intresting, sort of. I've never heard any requests for "cleanness" from anybody, and the two main customers (a music magazine and a newspaper) seem to be more interested in getting a "suitable" picture (<- the newspaper) or a interesting (not your average dull concert shot) photo ( <- both the newspaper and the music mag).

Well yes suitible first. always. And interesting (even though the most interesting image doesn't necessarily get published). I also have to take coulor, position, the direction of view and yes grain into consideration.
