not sure. I'll be sending it in, I'm not completely happy with the AF, but I'm not sure if it is related to the problem or if it is just an inherent thing of the large focus point size (I've noted before somewhere that it tends to jump to the background too easily).
I haven't used a 1D-class camera before that so I don't have a good basis for comparison, but comparing to my 5D it hasn't been a "religious experience", so I'm interested to see if anything is improved through sending it in.
Got a call from the Finnish company that does the Canon repairs, apparently somthing will happen (they will call in a few minutes again because I didn't have the serial number with me in the bathroom when they called ten minutes ago :))

Ah, great on the firmware ... we've been expecting that to come this week but Canon has been slipping so much I was not holding my breath! :-) I'll likely install it tonight if all goes well as I have boxing card to shoot Friday.
I'll be probably photographing a gig tonight with 1.1.3 firmware, I'll let you know how it goes (I have one of the "probably-bad" cameras based on SN, so for full potential a HW fix may still be needed).

Excellent! I just downloaded the firmware. I'll install tonight but be very interested in your result. As many have said at POTN, "If you don't get the hardware fix because you didn't see any problems, you might still get screwed if you sell it and don't have the fix."
^ sure, and since I have no experience on 1d mark 2, I have no basis for comparison and have no idea what the camera should be like, so I'll use all help I can get...
Anyway, got more info from the local service company: they say that they will "receive shortly" the fixing instructions. I'm hoping I'll be among the first to get the camera fixed as I promptly contacted them after I heard that Canon has admitted a HW fault, and I'm a CPS member. But I think it took a week or so for me to notice the Canon notice :/

Be happy to loan you a 1DMII or 1DMIIN if you want to compare! They are both quite excellent ... better than the "old" 1DMIII so I'm hoping these HW and firmware fixes improve things.
Well, I think it improved. Overall, the gig I photographed wasn't the best test, or at least I have to get some more experience with it before I say anything conclusive.
One series of a more or less static subject shows a distinctive backfocus issue (lens was 35/1.4@1.4), I'll have to look into that.
There were a few shots where the camera performed very well.
Anyhow, I'll have to wait for a gig with a more "standard" lighting so that I can compare it with previous experiences.
I loaded mine last night. A very short test of just pointing it around the house i n low light showed it still doing more searching than I would like. But, like you, I need a more standard test by shooting in a situation in which I have a lot of experience. The fights will be interesting but I will need a couple of concerts to tell for sure. Have you considered calibrating your lenses to the body? I have that on my list of things to do.
I'm still waiting to hear something official about the newest rumor that the 1DMIIIs will need another recall. I now have two. I am mostly fine but still think the AF is not as good as my 1DMII or 1DMIIN.
If you go to Rob Galbraith's web site, they did a very thorough test of the 1DM3 including extensive testing with Canon engineers on hand recording the entire thing on video. Their latest update from the PMA's meeting hints that a recall is eminent. Apparently, several key customers have been told in closed door meetings that it is coming, but no time frame has been leaked to date.

support Rob's pursuit of Canon I don't think he has a particularly "inside" track on the fixes so I'm not holding my breath even though I believe that the AF is not as good in most conditions with the 1DMIII as the 1DMIIN or 1DMII. So, while I am selling my 1DMII shortly I am going to hold onto my 1DMIIN for a while in case I need to send my 1DMIII bodies back to Canon ... I can't shoot without at least two bodies, sigh.
Re: Canon EOS 1D Mark 3 recall
So, is yours affected?

Keep us informed ;)
Re: Canon EOS 1D Mark 3 recall
Mine is in the "bad" serial number range and will be going back for the fix, sigh.

Last I Heard
was that Caon has officially disavowed that there is an additional fix coming. I haven't been back over to Rob's site to see if he has an update.
Canon EOS-1D Mark III AF Issues - Update
Rob posted an update this week .. evidence directly from Canon that a fix is coming.
