A fast UWA for crop cameras

11-16/2.8 from Tokina:

I don't recall seeing anything equal from other manufacturers (alternatives are slower, right?)

In other news, Sigma has released a diagonal (10mm, IIRC, f2.8) and a circular (4,5 mm f2.8) fisheye for crop cameras. The fact that the latter has a focusing motor is rather funny (if you focus to its hyperfocal distance, everything from about 20 cm to infinity will be in focus at its maximum aperture, if I'm not mistaken).

Re: A fast UWA for crop cameras

interesting... But would it fit a 1D series? It's a "digital SLR dedicated DX lens"

I've held an EF 14mm and 15mm fisheye lately, and must say I liked it...
Maybe im drifting back to the wider angles ;)

This Tokina is one lens I´m

This Tokina is one lens I´m looking forward to.
But so far I haven´t found any news about when it´s going to be sold here in Europe.
Hope it won´t take too long...

I now own the Canon 15mm fisheye, the Canon 14mm f/2.8L and the Sigma 8mm and I like them all. They allow a much wider variety of images than I used to have and are particularly effective on the 5D. Much as I know it may cause some drooling on keyboards I have a 1DsMIII in my budget for this year ... it was going to be the first quarter but a few concerts at the casino have been canceled (age related issues I expect) so it will more likely be mid-summer, but I am very excited about using these lenses on that body.

Re: A fast UWA for crop cameras

I'm really interested in the Sigma fisheyes. Any idea on a release date?

AC-Foto (Germany) has them stocked, so I'd guess they're available in Canada right now.

I'm not sure if I've written this elsewhere on these forums, but one of the most interesting ultra WA sollutions is a full-frame fisheye (Canon 15mm for full-size sensors) and the Fisheye-hemi plugin for photoshop. The combo yields (subjectively) the least distorted images than any other solution (including comparable rectilinear lenses, such as the sigma 12-24 full frame lens). The problem with rectilinear ultra wide lenses is that things get distorted towards the edges of the image.

Re: A fast UWA for crop cameras

I just had a look on Amazon. looks like the release date is on the 31st of January o8.

They are accepting pre orders. I guess Europe got the jump on us!

Thanks for that link to that PS plug in! That looks really cool!

I have the Sigma 12-24mm, and I notice quite a bit of distortion at the edges like you mentioned. That is on a crop sensor too! I can just imagine the distortion on a FF sensor! It is quite a big and heavy monster too and quite slow for it's size and weight! I think I'm going to sell it to help fund the fisheye.

Re: A fast UWA for crop cameras

Are those Tokina' UWA's even for sale yet? I haven't found any on B&H. It'd be nice to have a faster (f2.8) UWA in the bag.
