Bacon Brothers @ Rams Head On Stage

Thanks to Stacey, aka The Music Scene Zine, I was able to secure a photo pass to photograph the Bacon Brothers in Annapolis, Maryland. This is the band of actor Kevin Bacon and older brother Michael. The venue is a small, seated venue that only holds 250 people. The lighting was very dim and they band was painted in orange lighting from start to finish. I used a Nikon D200, Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 wide open, ISO 1600, and aperture priority mode. The max shutter speed I got on any single image was 1/25 of a second. Most were between 1/10 and 1/20 which means very few clean images. And at ISO 1600, plenty of noise. I was able to salvage a few via black & white conversion and heavy handed noise reduction in Adobe Camera Raw. Reducing them to web presentation size also eliminated a lot of the remaining noise. The original images are not print publishable.

that if the light is not sufficient to get a shutter speed of at least 1/100th, then switch to manual and boost the ISO to 3200. You can also increase the exposure in ACR post processing. The noise will suck, but at least you can stop the motion blur. And the conversion to BW will make the noise more palatable.

The Bacon Bros come to my venue occasionally too but I haven't shot them yet. I did, however shoot Dennis Quaid and the Sharks! They only do covers, but he puts on a heck of a show even busting out some of his Jerry Lee Lewis songs from the movie.
