We have revised the image posting guidelines, increasing the image size from 600 to 800 pixels on the long side. The primary reason we originally set the image size to 600 pixels was to minimize theft of your images because the image posting forums are readable by the public. We wanted them readable by the public so that search engines can index them. Permitting larger images encourages fans and bands to download and use them without our permission. The smaller size limit unfortunately has had a negative impact on people posting images to the forums. Most people are sizing their images larger than 600 pixels for posting on their own portfolios on their website. Posting images that meet our previous size limit required processing images twice, which we have found most people are not inclined to do.
As a compromise to encourage more image posting without more work to you, we have raised the image size limit from 600 to 800 pixels. We will leave the image forums readable to the public and still require you to be logged in to post and comment. If image theft becomes a problem, we will have to decide whether to restrict access to registered members only or to restrict image size again. Both have their drawbacks, but restricting access to probably would have less impact to you members since you can still post your larger images without processing images a second time to meet MPN requirements.
Please let us know if this change helps, and please post more images in the critique and sharing forums. We want people to use the site, so we will make any changes we can to make it usable.
