www.musicphotographers.co.uk

Hi,

A new website has been launched called www.musicphotographers.co.uk

It's a cooperative of six of the UK's leading music photographers. In an unusual move we have teamed up to promote ourselves as a collective throughout the music industry. Instead of competing against each other we joined forces to promote British music photographers.

We shoot for NME, MOJO, KERRANG , Q , WORD.

Photographer Rep.

I am in the process of looking for a rep. Does anybody have any advice for this? It seems that there are very few out there that represent music photographers. I may be looking in the wrong place though.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Chris Mullen

Who is my customer?

When a Label backs out last minute

So, I had the confirmation to shoot tomorrow night 2 weeks ago. I followed up the other night to get a second "OK" to be safe. Once again they said its a go. I get an email today saying that they aren't going to get me a pass. Normally I chalk it up as business as usual, but this is at a venue with notoriously bad lighting and is was going to be first 2 songs only instead of the normal first 3. I Rented a couple extra lenses to insure that the photos will come out in the bad lighting, but now I'm completely out that money.

What percentage does the agency take?

How often to images get licensed?
Do they get fair rates for license fees?
How often do they pay commissions?

Commercial Price Quote

I got the biggest out of the blue email of my life this morning

A Bandmerch.com license rep contacted me seeking a quote to shoot Rihanna backstage before & after the show in a studio type styled setup + cover her live show

The shots will go towards a 2010 calendar and possibly a poster

Impacted by economy?

Has anyone's photography business been impacted by the current world economic situation? Have you seen fewer jobs come in? Have you see fees go down? Have you seen no change in steady work?

BJP Article on Concert Photography and Rights Grabs

Pete Jenkins sent me through a very interesting article he wrote for the British Journal of Photography on concert photography and rights grabs. You can check it out at http://blog.blackshadow.com.au/2008/09/british-journal-of-photography-ar...

The Return On Investment of Social Networking Sites

Over on the Yahoo Music Photography group there is a thread on terms and conditions of social networking sites. It started as a topic surrounding rights grabbing language. I posted the following text as a means of researching the value of these social networking sites to our businesses. I am posting it here to reach an even wider audience. I'd like to hear whether I am accurate in my thinking.

Do we need an association?

I know some of you will have seen this posted elsewhere but I think it certainly has a place here.

Globally, the music industry is multi-billion dollar industry yet it seems that concert photojournalists are often the last to benefit in financial terms, yet those we photograph benefit directly through the publicity our photographs generate.

Since my involvement in editorial concert photography it has become apparent that there are a number of issues that most involved in this field are concerned about.

Retna

Industry:

I'm curious if anyone here is represented by Retna, if so I'd like to hear your opinions of what they are like.

Eg things like:

Do you get many sales through them?

Have you had any problems with them?

How do you find exclusive representation vs non-exclusive representation that some other photo agencies offer?

And anything else you can add about them.

Cheers, Richard
