MPN Site Upgrade

I just noticed that the account registration screen doesn't allow you to set the time zone for your profile. Make sure you log into the site and fill in your profile details. Set the proper time zone too so post times/dates display correctly for you based on your locale.

We have revised the image posting guidelines, increasing the image size from 600 to 800 pixels on the long side. The primary reason we originally set the image size to 600 pixels was to minimize theft of your images because the image posting forums are readable by the public. We wanted them readable by the public so that search engines can index them. Permitting larger images encourages fans and bands to download and use them without our permission. The smaller size limit unfortunately has had a negative impact on people posting images to the forums.

I'm not sure if everyone is aware of this. MPN offers blogs for everyone. Any registered member can write their own blog entries and they will be published to the front page. Will and I tend to be the prolific writers on the site, but we encourage everyone to write about topics they feel comfortable covering. If you are good at flash photography, feel free to write blog entries about that. If you had an interesting photo shoot that you think others would be interested in hearing about, feel free to document it in a blog.

I have created a simple banner for the site that you can download and post on your site with a link to us if you like. It isn't sexy, but it should do the job for now until we design something a little more interesting.

Will and I have been discussing with some members behind the scenes about collapsing our forums so that things are not so diluted. You will have fewer forums to monitor for new and updated topics.

Over the next few weeks we will collapse the image posting forums into just one or two forums. We will also collapse the business forums down to just a couple. In addition, we will merge the Announcements and Suggestion Box forums into the General Discussion forum.

Today we enabled a feature on the site that affects external links. You will now see an icon next to links that take you off our site, and they will open a new window (or tab depending on how you have your browser configured). In addition, e-mail addresses will have a new icon next to them as well - a little envelop. This isn't a major change, but we wanted you to know in case you wondered how / when this change in site behavior came about.
